The ASA St. Ferdinand Art program provides students the opportunity to explore the basic elements of art and the principles of design through a variety of different media. The methods presented within the curriculum allow the student to establish the skills needed to create original works of art that express the unique person that God created them to be. By studying the works of master artists, the students develop a greater appreciation for the arts.
All students receive art instruction once a week for a 45 minute period. In the spring the students display their artwork in our annual Art Fair.
The ASA St. Ferdinand Music program combines music literacy, appreciation, participation, and performance. It is our philosophy to teach the basics of music in ways that engage students and show them that music is all around us. Our elementary music education is largely based on the goal of developing a sense of rhythm and musical independence through movement, dance, exploration, improvisation, and performance. The musical experiences begin with singing and simple movements, and progress to chants, rounds, singing in parts, and playing rhythm instruments. These kinds of experiential learning give students knowledge of rhythm, melody, harmony, and note-reading. Our program expands children’s awareness of many different styles of music and encourages their appreciation of cultural similarities and differences. Performances of song and dance at many points in the year, including Advent and spring programs, give children memorable opportunities to share what they have learned with appreciative audiences.
The students receive music instruction twice a week for a 45-minute class period. The 5th-8th grade students have the opportunity to participate in the after-school band.
Physical activity is important in developing skills for a healthy lifestyle. The students at ASA St. Ferdinand Catholic School participate in developmental activities related to exercise and develop fundamental movement skills using space, time, and energy. The students engage in a variety of games and activities to develop strategic skills and exhibit positive safety practices, all while demonstrating Christian-like conduct and encouraging their spiritual development, and building their self-confidence and self-esteem.
The students at ASA St. Ferdinand Catholic School visit the computer lab weekly and participate in a 1:1 Chromebook program which allows all core classes to seamlessly integrate technology into each content area. Our curriculum is centered on learning basic computer concepts, using productivity tools to create products, keyboarding, coding, digital citizenship, and using the Internet for research and communication.
We also have access to the Shared Technology Library for the North County Deanery Federation. This gives us access to Little Bits, Class VR, Makey Makey, Code & Go Robot Mouse, Sphero Minis, Osmo, Green Screen, and Glowforge Printer. These items rotate around the schools so that all students can experience the use of these technologies.
