Our Kindergarten program is a faith-based and comprehensive program that teaches the mind, body, heart, and spirit of a child. We encourage students to strive for excellence in all areas of their scholastic life so that they will be well-rounded and successful. We integrate faith formation and teachings of our Catholic faith in every area of our curriculum.
Students learn through hands-on experiences, manipulative materials, and the use of technology.
Students are introduced to the Holy Family, saints, Jesus
as a man, Creator, and Savior, and the holy day. The students learn that Jesus is our friend who loves us and forgives us. Kindergarten attends liturgies every Friday with their 8th Grade Buddies.
Our reading series is called SUPERKIDS. Reading Readiness will include phonics and phonemic awareness activities. We will learn beginning and ending sounds, short vowel sounds, consonant blends, rhyming words, and sight words. We encourage daily practice at home with sight words. We do lots of writing together so that they develop confidence in writing. Toward the end of the year, we introduce spelling tests.
The students are read to at least twice a day and participate in Sound Sharing Day whenever we begin a new letter. Journal writing begins at the beginning of the year with pictures and advances through the year to writing sentences on a given topic.
In the second half of the year, students have the opportunity to participate in AR(Accelerated Reader). The students read a book and then take a quiz on the reading comprehension of the book.
The students start each day with calendar time which is used in conjunction with our math series. They will learn the days of the week, the months of the year, and the seasons. We will graph the water daily, tell time, recognize and count coins, and count by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Work with ten frames, place value, and even/odd numbers will also be presented to the students. Along with the calendar section, the students will learn the numerals 0-100 and their values through counting, making sets, and printing. They will work on time, geometrical shapes, measurement, money, addition, subtraction, and patterning.
Handwriting will be taught using the manuscript (Zaner-Bloser) method. We will work on proper letter formation and spacing between words in writing.
In Science, we cover plants, the body, dental hygiene, seasons, butterflies, the senses, and weather. The units incorporate reading, writing, and math.
In Social Studies we discuss taking pride in our country and learning about the United States. We learn about where we live in relation to the world.
